宮台：一つは、「市民による自治」や「市民の参加」という概念が非常に弱いので、「お任せ的」政治文化のなかでデモのもつ意味が非常にひねくれたものになってしまっている。
　　
　あと、僕が1985年から90年にかけて採ったデータですと、例えば、社会的な問題について自分がそれなりに見通していて、それに対して批判的なまなざしをもっていると思うのかと聞くとします。「自分は社会的な問題について見通していて、それに対して批判的なまなざしを持っている」と答える人間は、どういう人間か。対人関係あるいは等身大の人間関係をうまくやっている人間とうまくやっていない人間を比較してみると、対人関係、等身大の問題、例えば、性愛関係や友人関係をうまくやっている人間であればあるほど、社会的な問題について関心も強いし、批判力もあるんです。
　　
　統計データからはっきりしているのは、対人関係、人間関係、自意識の問題に苦慮している人間は、社会的見通し、批判力が非常に乏しくなります。そうしたデータを参考に推測するに、日本人は等身大の問題で不幸すぎる。性愛関係やサークルを含めた人間関係に対して、あまりにも不全感や抑圧感を持っているがゆえに、そちらのほうに自分たちの関心のエネルギーを取られてしまっているのではないかという僕の想像が以前からあります。
